Charlie Parr playing at The Keep

We've got a few more bookings to tell you about - there's sure to be something here of interest.  Well, all the artists we've brought to Guildford in 2017 have been from the USA - Sarah Jarosz - Courtney Marie Andrews - Aoife O'Donovan - John Murry - Joan Shelley.  So it's nice to do something a bit different. Yes, it's an Englishman next! John Smith: solo artist, singer/songwriter, ace guitar player and regular member of Lisa Hannigan's touring band. The legend has it that John got his first break when he wrote a letter asking John Martyn if he could do a support on his upcoming tour. When he heard the tape JM asked him to do the whole tour. Now, wiz forward to this year and John has just released his latest album HEADLONG, and it's his best yet.  So it's a great pleasure to welcome him here at last.  He'll be at the Keep on 1 November.
Just a few tickets left for this one, it's bound to sell out in the next few days. And looking ahead to the rest of the year and beyond there's some rare treats for which we're back to the USA for - the return later in November of the excellent JIM WHITE. One of my all-time favourites SAM AMIDON arriving in December. And finally the legend that is CHARLIE PARR next March.  If you don't know them, please check them OUT! click here for tickets.

Lucy Ward is an impressive, original songwriter whose unique delivery and breath-taking voice has enchanted audiences the world over. Her music never fails to get to the heart of the human condition with her expressive, unflinching writing style and warm personality that radiates from the stage. Having come up through the folk tradition, Ward’s music has a sense of rooted belonging. She is BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner and is the youngest person ever to be nominated for the prestigious BBC Folk Singer of the Year.
” totally totally brilliant – some trad some stuff of her own raw and powerful and sparse but meaningful arrangements… made my day. One of the best things I’ve heard in years” Mike Harding, (The Mike Harding Folk Show)
“Brit folk’s most vibrant and forthright new young talent”
Mojo Magazine
Four Stars “This contemporary folk album is outstanding“…a wonderful record. The stories had me mesmerised”
Maverick Magazine Sam Carter
Since being named Best Newcomer at the 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Sam Carter has been stirring audiences from Camden to Canada, including an attention grabbing appearance on Later… with Jools Holland.
Described as ‘the finest English-style finger-picking guitarist of his generation’ by Bellowhead’s Jon Boden, Sam has toured the world, equally happy to perform intimate solo shows on acoustic guitar, on electric with a full band, or to collaborate with other artists. Sam's 3rd solo album How The City Sings won four star reviews and features twelve songs that are at times affectingly intimate and at others brimming with righteous rage. As the album formed, Sam began to notice these songs were shot through with images and aspects of London. After ten years living in the capital it had become not only the backdrop but a central player in the parts of his life these lyrics detailed.
‘This is a bittersweet folk-electric concept album, influenced by his time spent in London, and the songs range from the slow and personal From the South Bank to Soho, which features exquisite viola work from Sam Sweeney, to the remarkable Drop the Bomb, which starts as a gentle ballad backed by the piano of Neil Cowley (of Adele fame) and ends as a furious electric guitar workout.’ ???? The Guardian ‘A singer who can hold the audience spellbound all by himself’  R2
