The Guildford Institute - A History Of Christmas

Nick is a former Principal Librarian with the London Borough of Redbridge. He is now a freelance speaker covering a wide range of subjects. This event will offer an informative, but light-hearted look at Christmas, from its origins as a pre-Christian festival right up to the modern-day commercialised celebration. We will look at the Victorian era when Christmas was effectively reinvented, partly by Charles Dickens and A Christmas Carol, and investigate Christmas during two world wars. The talk will be illustrated with pictures, readings and carols (so bring your voice)!
