The Boileroom - Gaz Coombes

23 January 2019 Seventeen years in the same band, and you can start to forget things. Gaz Coombes is recovering a feeling - the moment you first realise that music can give you goose-bumps, make your hair stand on end. He got it aged fourteen, and he’s getting it again now.

It was a “new emotion,” he recalls. “Like nothing I’d felt before, and it would choke me. I was always in tune with that feeling, but never quite brave enough to explore it myself.” For nearly two decades with Supergrass, Coombes came ... read more

"Putting punk and protest back into the mainstream" The Guardian
"Sounds like Kathleen Hanna meets Roy Orbison" John Kennedy, Radio X Tipped as the voice of punk‘s next generation, Louise Distras plays a socially conscious and insightful brand of protest poetry descended from The Clash bloodline.

The Boileroom - The Wave Pictures

The Wave Pictures return with the promised second album of the year, Look Inside Your Heart - a warm, joyous record celebrating friendship, happiness and drunken party times. Like the first album they released this year, the more contemplative Brushes With Happiness, this one was recorded late at night whilst inebriated back at the tiny Booze Cube Studio in Stoke Newington, live to reel-to-reel tape with no computers of any kind. The album is peppered with giggles and chatter, which adds a sense of spontaneity and place.

As singer and guitarist Dave Tattersall explains: ”Look Inside Your Heart is intended as a rallying cry in the war against the machines; while a computer may have beaten world-champion human being Lee Sedol at Go, a machine could never have made... read more

The Boileroom - Independent Venue Week: Childcare

Monday 28 January 2019 7pm It all started when Ed Cares, one of West London's most in-demand male nannies, was overheard humming a song he had written, by Katie, aged six, who persuaded him to form a band. Josh, eight, boldly proclaimed: "You're probably my second favourite artist after Katy Perry."

Their debut EP, Made Simple, released earlier this year, earned them all sorts of tastemaker acclaim and national radio play. Prestigious UK tastemakers DIY, The Line of Best Fit, Wonderland and The 405 all tipping the group as one’s to watch.

With a sling of festivals, including the legendary Reading and Leeds, and a recent Radio 1 Maida Vale session tucked safely under their belts, the band’s vivid and visceral live show has gone from strength to strength. Affirming this, thequartet set out on their first ever headline tour through November, finishing with a sold out show at the Lexington in an emphatic expression of their place as one of the most exciting new bands this country has to offer.

The quartet is completed by Emma Topolski (Bass, Vocals), Rich Legate (Guitar, Backing Vocals) and Glyn Daniels (Drums, Backing Vocals). Simple Fiction Simple Fiction combine everything you know and love about indie rock and reinvent it ... read more

The Boileroom - Independent Venue Week: Her's

Tuesday 29 January 2019 As outsiders from sleepy coastal towns several countries apart,Stephen Fitzpatrick from Barrow in Furness and Norwegian AudunLaading met for the first time in Liverpool as students. The pair bonded over a love of peculiar, sardonic humour and wide eye observations. Dream-pop outfit Her’s is the natural extension to the solitary decoding of the cultures they grew up in. Together they create 80s indie influenced songs with nods to Orange Juice and the capriciousness of Ariel Pink-ish pop.

“Kind of like what would happen if The Strokes went to the beach for the summer” – FADER “There’s something instantly charismatic about Her’s which proves pivotal.. It takes their jangly, oddball pop songs into another league” ... read more

The Boileroom - Independent Venue Week: Ben Ottewell

Wednesday 30 January 2019 7pm Ben Ottewell has announced the release of new album A Man Apart and new single Watcher released on 25th May, both through Sunday Best. With an avid following from the days in his former band Gomez, A Man Apart is singer/songwriter Ben Ottewell’s third solo offering and follows his albums Shapes and Shadows and Rattlebag. The album is a record that crosses musical genres such as Americana, blues and folk backed by Ben’s unmistakable gutsy and gravelly voice. Co-written with childhood friend and former Tunng member, Sam Genders, the album was recorded in Los Angeles and Sheffield and engineered and produced in the latter by Martin Smith (Richard Hawley).

A Man Apart delves into such relevant subjects as love and relationships, fame and politics. The album’s title track focuses on populist politicians exploiting people’s hopes and fears, with Bones touching on the realisation of not being worth... read more

The Boileroom - Independent Venue Week: Me and the Moon

Thursday 31 January 2019 7pm Formed in the summer of 2015, MATM embody those long, warm, hazy days of endless opportunity; beautifully pairing youthful innocence with apathy and worldliness. Tamara and Jonny have already found favour from the indie scene, playing notable support slots for Marika Hackman, Flyte and Marsicans. After self-releasing 1st EP ‘Run With Wolves’ and follow-up single ‘Get Away’, the band began to receive continuous support from BBC Introducing with both tracks ‘Run With Wolves’ and ‘Hold On’ featured regularly and the band performing live for BBC Introducing at the John Peel Centre in Suffolk.

Carson McHone at The Keep!

1 February 2018 Carson McHone releases a new single 'Sad' and unveils a 2019 UK Tour.
'Sad’ is Carson McHone’s first music video and although its familiar barroom setting is one many of us will recognise from Country music videos (indeed the location is one McHone knows well - The White Horse in Austin, TX is a place both played at and frequented by the artist) the rest of the film is deliciously off kilter, as Carson explains:

“We are dealing with an abstract concept, the inner struggle with self, so I wanted the backdrop to be obviously staged to illustrate this metaphor. ….we weren't trying to capture a night at the White Horse. We wanted the honky tonk t... read more
