A growing preoccupation with body image is a recurring theme of the digital age. Some claim that the popularity of selfies and posting photos onto social media has created a generation obsessed with their looks.
With this in mind, The Friary Guildford is inviting YOU to join them for a range of interactive workshops tailored on body image.
Workshop with Juliette Burton – Friday 17th May
Juliette Burton is a professional speaker who specialises in Body Image and Social Media. Juliette has sold out runs at Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. In 2018 she was listed as Sunday Times Culture Pick, The Times Best of Edinburgh Festivals 2018 and The Telegraph Top 25 Rising Stars of Edinburgh Fringe. Juliette has contributed to Cosmopolitan, The Huffington Post, BBC Radio 4’s Newsjack and the BBC News. The Friary Guildford has teamed up with Juliette and she will be hosting talks/seminars at local Guildford schools in order to provide thought-provoking, unique, supportive and inspirational messages while being open about mental health issues and body confidence.
Body Image Day – Saturday 18th May
In partnership with Calm Curious, a Guildford-based mindfulness and wellbeing organization, The Friary Guildford will be looking to support people in increasing happiness and overcoming negative thinking about body image.
Vi the Centre on Saturday 18th May between 10am and 5:15pm to take part in a programme of FREE taster sessions designed to boost body and mind. All sessions will be held on level one, next to The Fragrance shop. See the activities and schedule below:

Ginny is a photographer who will help you to look amazing and find your inner goddess using photography.
SOOTHE TIRED MUSCLES AND GAIN MORE ENERGY
Tanya is a sports massage therapist and running coach. She will show you how to join your physical body and mental health. Short massage sessions will be provided during the day and tips on how to start or improve your running.
BE MORE CONFIDENT IN YOUR BODY
Margarita is the Chief Happifier and will empower you to change your outlook on the world. Be happier. Be more confident. Be calmer. Be more awesome! Learn how to work with your body and use simple techniques to overcome low self-esteem.
ADD JEWELLERY FOR THAT PERFECT LOOK
Poppy is a local artist, creating unique jewellery with the energy and the emotion of music. Find unusual jewellery for your independent spirit and adventurous heart.
YOGA FOR MIND AND BODY
Beccy is a yoga teacher and will help you to boost your body and mind.
TAI-CHI FOR MIND AND BODY
Luke is a Tai-chi instructor. Harmonise your mind, body and spirit with gentle movements.

Fran, a functional health coach, will show you how a balanced diet can improve your mood.

#FriaryNoFilter – Awareness Campaign – Monday 13th to Sunday 19th May
In conjunction with the Mental Health Foundation’s social campaign, #BeBodyKind, The Friary Guildford will be encouraging people of all ages to post a photo of themselves on social media with no filters applied and of a place and time when they felt comfortable in their skin. All Friary Guildford staff will be wearing Mental Health Foundation green ribbon pins throughout the week in support of the foundation.
Centre Manager at The Friary Guildford, Vicky Hickson, said “We are incredibly proud to be supporting Mental Health Awareness Week. We have a number of activities lined up throughout the week which we hope will be fun and engaging as well as informative and beneficial. Working with local schools was a priority for us as mental health issues are becoming more and more prominent in younger generations, so we wanted to help them realise that it’s ok to be themselves. We are very lucky to be joined by so many talented guest speakers, and we look forward to welcoming people to the Centre in support of the Mental Health Foundation.”
